Balance Two Kinds of Feedback
•
Descriptive Feedback
(preferred by boys): Feedback that is honest and accurate, that lets the
student know how they are doing and what they need to do to improve.
•
Supportive Feedback
(preferred by girls): Feedback that builds the student’s confidence and
helps them to believe that they can improve.
Give Girls and Boys Something to EAT
Teacher’s feedback must put the emphasis on how well students have or have not improved, rather
than how clever they are.
E
– Effort – How hard you think the student has worked.
A
– Achievement – How pleased you are at the progress that they have made.
T
– Technique – The strategies that students have used to be successful and / or the strategies
that they need to use to do even better.
Whatever feedback you give girls or boys, and however you give the feedback, put the emphasis on
improvement rather than on the achievement of absolute standards of performance.
