Chapter One
Accelerated Learning
What is Accelerated Learning?
Accelerated Learning “happens when teachers take account of how our brains learn most
effectively. It is based on recent (2003-year of publication) research into the physiology of the brain
and on studies into the most effective teaching methods from around the world”.
Why Accelerated Learning?
•
There have been more scientific discoveries on how the brain works and people learn.
•
Makes sense that we improve the way we teach or the way we understand how young
minds think and coach it towards our desired outcome.
How to Accelerate Learning?
•
Preparation stage:
Students’ basic needs – students must be in the correct
physical state
to learn
(hydration, nourishment, room temperature, light and oxygen levels).
→
Use
music in a structured way
.
→
Help students enter a positive
emotional state
for learning (stress levels and
motivation).
→
Create an
environment that supports learning
but make activities challenging
(ground rules and respect).
→
Develop
good working relationships
with students and use praise frequently.
→
Plan
inclusive learning activities
that respect full range of learning styles and
intelligences, and are
accessible
to all students.
•
Implementation stage:
→
Before lesson begins:
Engage students’ interest with a question or puzzle on the board.
→
Lesson proper:
Part 1:
put learning in context (about 5% of lesson time):
Explore what the students learnt in previous lesson.
Relate the learning to the overall syllabus.
Make the learning outcomes clear.
Explain what is coming next.
Use of mind-maps for the above.
