Criterion
What it is Great for
Concerns to Take
Note of
Group roles
All students will have to play their part since
they are dependent on each other for the
outcome.
Group leader – facilitates progress.
Note-taker – records ideas.
Time keeper – monitors task
completion.
Summariser – checks agreement.
Spokesperson – provides feedback.
Resource finder – whatever the group
needs, they grab it.
Different students will
have different strengths.
Allow groups to choose
their own roles at times,
but also differentiate by
ensuring that everyone
experiences each role
over time.
Envoys
To avoid long feedback sessions, each
group sends out an envoy to another group
to whom the envoy explains their work.
Version 1:
The envoy answers any
questions and returns to their original group
to compare the qualities of work given
before widening out into a class discussion
of five or six examples.
Version 2:
Envoys continue until they have
visited all of the other groups, spending a
minute or two with each. Students will try to
persuade each other which point / argument
/ technique works most effectively, etc.
Version 3:
Envoys can work in pairs to
carry out this task.

Triads
Useful for peer assessment.
Working in threes with specific roles can
produce highly focused work.
Version 1:
If all three study different texts or
data beforehand, as
B
questions
A
about
what they have studied,
C
writes notes.
Rotate twice so that all three have shared
their knowledge, listened to others and
contributed to a comprehensive set of
notes.
Version 2: C
can act as an observer who
could consider, for instance, the skills being
demonstrated as
A
interviews
B
for a job
and then provide both with feedback.
Differentiate carefully the
combinations of students
in triads and the level of
task they take on to
optimize learning.
Assessment and Feedback
Formatively
, assessment is more purposeful when it ascertains learning and progress and
identifies the next steps that a student should take.
It is accepted good practice to ensure that students are aware of the criteria against which they are
being assessed. Use self-assessment and peer assessment regularly so your students are used to
applying the criteria
