Differentiated targets
Ensure that all students, from the highest achievers to those making slowest progress, are set
targets that incorporate:
Time
When will progress towards targets be checked?
Achievability
To build confidence, emphasise success and renew motivation.
Relevance
So that they are focused and meaningful for that student.
Growth
Building skills and abilities, not about marks or behaviour.
Effort
That will make the difference between the student stalling or progressing.
Teacher
Providing the necessary support.
Stretch
To ensure that the student makes real steps in their learning.
Involve students in negotiating or setting their own targets. This makes them more personal,
creates greater engagement and is more likely to lead to success.
Differentiate to achieve flow.
“When goals are clear, feedback relevant, and challenges and skills are in balance, attention
becomes ordered and fully invested.”
Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1997)
