Explaining, Organising and Introducing Learning
The way you introduce a topic will affect the way the learning is perceived by your students
and will affect what they pay attention to later in the topic. Help your students by making
explicit what they should be focusing their attention on.
1. Memory and recall strategies
Repetition. Get your students to do things multi-sensory domains at once (
e.g.
incorporate visual and auditory by reading aloud).
Pictures are better than words for promoting recall.
Do something really memorable at key points in a topic (
e.g.
go outside and do a
crazy activity).
Time Travels. Improve memory by getting your pupils to remember the context as
well as the content. Introduce key topics in interesting ways or places. When
revising with the class refer back to these contexts.
Imaginary Spaces. Teach your students to use techniques like “The Roman
Room” where they associate different spaces in an imaginary location with aspects
of the learning. Get them to draw their room and physically walk around it in a
large space. Later, by touring the room in their mind’s eye they will be able to
recall their learning.
Chunking. Chunking information makes it easier to remember. For instance, the
number 251210 is easier to remember if you notice the association with Christmas
Day and chunk it 25-12-10.
