Chapter Ten
Learning to Learn
Introduction
Starting Quote: “The only cure for boredom is curiosity.”
Students must see the answer to: “Why learn? What is in it for me?”
Henry Ford said “Whether
you
think
you
can or think
you
can’t,
you
are probably right.”
It is important to instil a Growth mindset in kids (Carol Dweck).
Some Techniques for Learners:
1. Skimming
(
e.g.
book or long article)
Read the headings first, zoom in to sections that seem most interesting, repeat
from back to front, and then finally mark out the most relevant 5-6 sections.
2. Slicing
For a big paragraph, number it into smaller sections.
For large number of discrete information, group similar sections together.
3. Simplifying
(
e.g.
long paragraph)
Re-write in your own words/short-forms.
Highlight and create bullet points.
4.
Create networked notes or Mindmaps.
5.
Discover and use your dominant learning style.
6.
Use multiple senses: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic.
Retaining what You have Learnt:
1.
7 Keys to memory: outstanding, funny, personal, emotional, sensory, sexual and first +
last,
e.g.
use bright colours, crazy voices, imagination.
2.
Mnemonics: Richard of York gave battle in vain (red, orange, yellow, green, blue,
indigo, violet).
Sentences must flow.
Employ the 7 keys above.
Add movement,
e.g.
RHYTHM: “rhythm has your two hips moving.”
3.
Mind pegs.
4.
Create a story or song that links the information together.
5.
Memorise lists in blocks of 5.
6.
Use tune or patterns to remember numbers.
